FinRobot: AI Agent for Equity Research and Valuation with Large Language Models

Tianyu Zhou; Pin Wang; Yilin Wu; Hongyang Yang

Abstract

As financial markets grow increasingly complex, there is a rising need for automated tools that can effectively assist human analysts in equity research, particularly within sell-side research. While Generative AI (GenAI) has attracted significant attention in this field, existing AI solutions often fall short due to their narrow focus on technical factors and limited capacity for discretionary judgment. These limitations hinder their ability to adapt to new data in real-time and accurately assess risks, which diminishes their practical value for investors. This paper presents FinRobot, the first AI agent framework specifically designed for equity research. FinRobot employs a multi-agent Chain of Thought (CoT) system, integrating both quantitative and qualitative analyses to emulate the comprehensive reasoning of a human analyst. The system is structured around three specialized agents: the Data-CoT Agent, which aggregates diverse data sources for robust financial integration; the Concept-CoT Agent, which mimics an analysts reasoning to generate actionable insights; and the Thesis-CoT Agent, which synthesizes these insights into a coherent investment thesis and report. FinRobot provides thorough company analysis supported by precise numerical data, industry-appropriate valuation metrics, and realistic risk assessments. Its dynamically updatable data pipeline ensures that research remains timely and relevant, adapting seamlessly to new financial information. Unlike existing automated research tools, such as CapitalCube and Wright Reports, FinRobot delivers insights comparable to those produced by major brokerage firms and fundamental research vendors. In one sentence

FinRobot is an open-source multi-agent LLM framework that automates equity research by integrating quantitative data processing, conceptual reasoning, and narrative synthesis to generate professional-grade investment reports.

Summary

The paper addresses the limitations of existing automated financial tools, which often lack the discretionary judgment and real-time adaptability of human sell-side analysts. It introduces FinRobot, the first AI agent framework specifically designed for comprehensive equity research. The system aims to bridge the gap between narrow technical analysis and the nuanced, qualitative reasoning required for robust investment decisions, offering a solution that can dynamically update with new financial information and provide realistic risk assessments comparable to major brokerage firms. FinRobot employs a multi-agent Chain of Thought (CoT) architecture comprising three specialized agents: the Data-CoT Agent, which aggregates and structures diverse data sources including SEC filings, earnings transcripts, and alternative data; the Concept-CoT Agent, which mimics analyst reasoning to derive actionable insights and financial metrics like EBITDA and ROIC; and the Thesis-CoT Agent, which synthesizes these findings into a coherent investment thesis and report. The methodology integrates quantitative calculations with qualitative storytelling, utilizing a dynamic data pipeline to ensure timeliness. Experiments were conducted on Waste Management, Inc., generating a full equity research report evaluated by a panel of investment banking analysts. The system was evaluated on accuracy, logicality, and storytelling, receiving high scores from expert reviewers who noted the precision of financial data and the professional structure of the output. Key findings include the ability to generate detailed competitor analyses, valuation models (DCF), and risk assessments. However, limitations include occasional unnatural phrasing, a tendency to read like a list of statistics rather than a compelling narrative, and the need for human oversight in complex qualitative judgments. The open-source release democratizes access to advanced AI-driven research tools.

Research problem

Existing AI solutions for financial analysis often fail to replicate the comprehensive, nuanced reasoning of human sell-side analysts, focusing too narrowly on technical factors and lacking discretionary judgment. There is a need for automated tools that can integrate real-time data, perform both quantitative and qualitative analysis, and produce coherent investment theses that match professional standards.

Core contributions

  • Introduction of FinRobot, the first AI agent framework specifically designed for end-to-end equity research.
  • Development of a multi-agent Chain of Thought (CoT) system that decomposes research into data processing, concept generation, and thesis synthesis.
  • Integration of a dynamic, real-time data pipeline that aggregates structured and unstructured financial data from diverse sources.
  • Creation of a novel evaluation framework using Accuracy, Logicality, and Storytelling metrics assessed by human experts.
  • Open-sourcing of the FinRobot platform to democratize access to advanced AI-driven financial analysis tools.

Method

  • Multi-agent Chain of Thought (CoT) architecture with three specialized agents.
  • Data-CoT Agent: Aggregates and structures raw data from SEC filings, transcripts, and alternative sources.
  • Concept-CoT Agent: Performs financial reasoning, calculating metrics like EBITDA, ROIC, and WACC.
  • Thesis-CoT Agent: Synthesizes insights into a structured investment thesis with valuation and risk assessment.
  • Dynamic data pipeline for real-time updates and integration of new financial information.
  • Evaluation using expert human reviewers scoring accuracy, logicality, and storytelling on a 0-10 scale.

Results & findings

  • FinRobot generates reports with high accuracy, with expert reviewers noting precise financial data and correct calculations.
  • The system successfully mimics human analyst reasoning, providing actionable insights on revenue drivers and margin trends.
  • Storytelling scores were slightly lower than accuracy, with reviewers noting occasional unnatural phrasing and a need for more engaging narratives.
  • The generated report for Waste Management included a BUY rating with a target price range of $144.3 to $176.6.
  • Competitor analysis effectively benchmarked WM against Waste Connections (WCN) on key financial metrics.
  • The multi-agent CoT approach outperformed standard single-agent prompting in logical flow and data support.

Data & experiments

  • Data sources include SEC filings (10-K, 10-Q), earnings call transcripts, corporate releases, competitor filings, and alternative data like Google Trends.
  • Case study focused on Waste Management, Inc. (WM) in the environmental services sector.
  • Evaluation involved a panel of seven investment banking analysts rating the generated report on accuracy, logicality, and storytelling.
  • Comparison against existing automated tools like CapitalCube and Wright Reports in terms of analytical depth and narrative quality.
  • Quantitative metrics calculated include revenue growth, EBITDA margins, ROIC, WACC, and DCF valuations.

Limitations & caveats

  • Storytelling ability was rated lower than accuracy, with some reports reading like lists of statistics.
  • Occasional unnatural phrasing and repetitive sentence structures were noted by reviewers.
  • Qualitative analysis of blue-chip news-driven stocks may still require human oversight.
  • Valuation may lack depth if multiple methods are not integrated.
  • The system's performance depends on the quality and availability of input data sources.
  • Potential for minor inaccuracies in valuation due to reliance on historical averages and projections.
